Comparison of two X-band DSD retrieval algorithms

چکیده
In this study we investigate two retrieval techniques for estimating all three DSD parameters from X-band dualpolarization observations. The first retrieval technique is an adaptation for X-band of the technique proposed by Zhang et al. (2001), which is based on the two power-related radar parameters, the reflectivity at horizontal polarization (ZH) and differential reflectivity (ZDR). The technique uses a constrained μ−Λ relationship to derive the third DSD parameter.

Comparison of Two Raindrop Size Distribution Retrieval Algorithms for X-Band Dual Polarization Observations
In this study the authors evaluate two algorithms, the so-called beta ( ) and constrained methods, proposed for retrieving the governing parameters of the “normalized” gamma drop size distribution (DSD) from dual-polarization radar measurements. The method treats the drop axis ratio as a variable and computes drop shape and DSD parameters from radar reflectivity (ZH), differential reflectivity ...
متن کاملHigh-resolution Rainfall Rate and Dsd Estimation from X-band Polarimetric Radar Measurements
This study proposes investigation of new attenuation correction and microphysical retrieval methods for X-band polarimetric radar (XPOL). It will concentrate on exploring the dependence of the retrieval on raindrop size distribution variability, and its sensitivity with respect to the selection of oblateness-size relation (or axial ratio) and maximum diameter limit. Variations in the assumed fo...
متن کاملQuantitative analysis of X-band weather radar attenuation correction accuracy
At short wavelengths, especially C-, X-, and Kband, weather radar signals are attenuated by the precipitation along their paths. This constitutes a major source of error for radar rainfall estimation, in particular for intense precipitation. A recently developed stochastic simulator of range profiles of raindrop size distributions (DSD) provides a controlled experiment framework to investigate ...
متن کاملOn the Effect of Thr Drop Size Distribution (dsd) and Melting Lyaer to the Brightness Temperature of a Spaceborne Passive Microwave Radiometer
Since the TRMM launch in 1997, global rain estimation by microwave radiometer has been improved referring the PR data. The microwave radiometer observation becomes the major observation tool for the Global Precipitation Measurement (GPM). However, there are still gaps of global rainfall distribution between PR and TMI (e.g. Berg et al., 2002). One of the major issues for rain retrieval algorith...
متن کاملDrop Shape and Dsd Retrieval with an X-band Dual Polarization Radar
There is a renewed interest in the use of X-band weather radars, due to specific advantages such as applications to rainfall estimation in light rain, monitoring of sensitive areas that are inadequately covered by operational radar networks as well as the radar network concept introduced by the Center for Collaborative Adaptive Sensing of the Atmosphere (CASA) (Chandrasekar et al. 2004). The us...
